Properties
Rain Moonstone consists of layers of potassium feldspar ( orthoclase ) and sodium feldspar ( albite ). The versatile play of colors is created by refracting the light between these layers. The thinner the layers of Moonstone, the more intense this effect.
Sodium causes the blue color. The more sodium in the stone, the bluer this shine. Contaminants in the stone cause the different colors. Iron, for example, causes a red to dark color ( smoke moonstone ). The intensity of the color depends on the amount of iron contained.
